There are some fabulous French canal holidays to choose from, each with a different itinerary, a different focus, and a different location. European Waterways have recently released a new itinerary for their Hotel Barge Clair de Lune on the Canal du Midi. It offers yet another wonderful option among an already excellent selection of French canal holidays.
The Hotel Barge Clair de Lune
The Canal du Midi has so much potential for excellent itineraries. The new route to be taken by the hotel barge Clair de Lune, due to be on offer between 17th July and 24th September this year, travels between Trebes, the delightful city close to Carcassonne, and Naurouze, which is the canal’s highest point.
On this brand new French canal holiday, guests enjoy a relaxing, picturesque and peaceful trip through one of the most stunning parts of southern France. Gently sailing past charming villages, through local vineyards and in touching distance of many places of cultural interest, the itinerary covers just about everything a barge holiday should.
The deluxe Clair de Lune is one of the smaller vessels in the fleet, comfortably housing up to six passengers, so it is perfect for a small group of friends or family to charter. The stylish suites with en suite facilities are designed with cherry wood and African hardwoods. There is a spa pool on board and plenty of room on the deck for serious unwinding. A professional crew that includes a chef and a tour guide is at your beckon call, and with 6 bikes on the barge which are there for the free use of guests, what more could you want?
The new itinerary begins in Le Somail where guests join the barge, and on day two everyone can enjoy cruising across the Fresquel Aqueduct. There is lots of time in the itinerary set aside to explore the Gallo Roman city of Carcassonne, which is the most well restored medieval city in the world. The defensive ramparts and the 52 watchtowers are only part of the defensive make-up of the city, which is a great place to discover on foot.
Other highlights include visits to the historical site of the Cathar village of Minerve and the Cathar town of Mirepoix. Guests will be treated to tours of the gorgeous city of Narbonne and of the old Cathar town of Castelnaudary, which was the birthplace of the famous French gastronomic delight known as cassoulet. There will be time to marvel at the stunning Lac de Saint- Ferréol and, of course, as no canal holiday in France is complete without a wine tasting, this itinerary includes a private wine tasting in Limoux where you can sample the local sparkling vintage.
If you haven’t decided on your summer holiday plans yet, then this new itinerary from European Waterways should definitely be considered. Of all the French canal holidays on offer, this one looks set to be very popular.
