European Waterways’ New Itinerary for this Summer

There are some fabulous French canal holidays to choose from, each with a different itinerary, a different focus, and a different location. European Waterways have recently released a new itinerary for their Hotel Barge Clair de Lune on the Canal du Midi. It offers yet another wonderful option among an already excellent selection of French canal holidays.

The Hotel Barge Clair de Lune

The Canal du Midi has so much potential for excellent itineraries. The new route to be taken by the hotel barge Clair de Lune, due to be on offer between 17th July and 24th September this year, travels between Trebes, the delightful city close to Carcassonne, and Naurouze, which is the canal’s highest point.

On this brand new French canal holiday, guests enjoy a relaxing, picturesque and peaceful trip through one of the most stunning parts of southern France. Gently sailing past charming villages, through local vineyards and in touching distance of many places of cultural interest, the itinerary covers just about everything a barge holiday should.

The deluxe Clair de Lune is one of the smaller vessels in the fleet, comfortably housing up to six passengers, so it is perfect for a small group of friends or family to charter. The stylish suites with en suite facilities are designed with cherry wood and African hardwoods. There is a spa pool on board and plenty of room on the deck for serious unwinding. A professional crew that includes a chef and a tour guide is at your beckon call, and with 6 bikes on the barge which are there for the free use of guests, what more could you want?

Itinerary Highlights

The new itinerary begins in Le Somail where guests join the barge, and on day two everyone can enjoy cruising across the Fresquel Aqueduct. There is lots of time in the itinerary set aside to explore the Gallo Roman city of Carcassonne, which is the most well restored medieval city in the world. The defensive ramparts and the 52 watchtowers are only part of the defensive make-up of the city, which is a great place to discover on foot.

Other highlights include visits to the historical site of the Cathar village of Minerve and the Cathar town of Mirepoix. Guests will be treated to tours of the gorgeous city of Narbonne and of the old Cathar town of Castelnaudary, which was the birthplace of the famous French gastronomic delight known as cassoulet. There will be time to marvel at the stunning Lac de Saint- Ferréol and, of course, as no canal holiday in France is complete without a wine tasting, this itinerary includes a private wine tasting in Limoux where you can sample the local sparkling vintage.

If you haven’t decided on your summer holiday plans yet, then this new itinerary from European Waterways should definitely be considered. Of all the French canal holidays on offer, this one looks set to be very popular.

Discover Saint-Emilion Wines on French Canal Holidays

One of the most popular ways to get off the beaten path and enjoy the best of the French countryside is on French canal holidays. The Canal du Garonne runs through Bordeaux, one of the stunning wine regions in the south west of France. For those discerning travellers choosing to enjoy one of the many wonderful French canal holidays in this area, a real treat lies in store.

One of the little gems in this Bordeaux region is the charming wine village of Saint-Emilion. World famous today, this village has been producing wine for hundreds of years. Harmoniously combining endless vineyards, wonderful medieval architecture and beautiful monuments, Saint-Emilion is a fine example of how men and wine have been making history for centuries.

The Birth of Saint-Emilion

The story of how this charming village came about is regarded as a legend, but it’s a lovely story none the less. In the 8th century, a monk named Emilion fled from Vannes in Brittany, where he lived, and decided to hide out in one of the caves in the village, which was then known as Ascum bas. A solitary hermit he might have been, but he was also very famous in the local area for his ability to perform miracles. His following increased and with his disciples he turned the village into a religious centre. His legacy was so engrained that even when he died, the place retained its religious accolade, with the villagers renaming the town “Saint–Emilion” in the monk’s honour.

Over the years the village was developed architecturally, and today there are 200km of underground galleries beneath the village and the vineyard. In 1999, the vineyard here was the first in the world to be named on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a UNESCO Cultural Landscape.

The Wine

French canal holidays in the region offer the opportunity to indulge in delicious local wines, and none is more famous than that of Saint-Emilion. The wines here are diverse thanks to the varied geography and soils, as well as the ideal microclimate it experiences. Combined with the perfect natural winemaking conditions is the expertise of the winemakers, who have learnt to work with their land for centuries to get the best out of every vine. There is such a huge range of wine maturity and flavours that come from the different blends of grapes, and this is testament to the skill of the winemakers.

The success of the Saint-Emilion wine is also partly attributed to the hard work of the Jurade, which is a wine brotherhood founded in 1199. Despite its authority coming under scrutiny in 1789, the Jurade was re-established in 1948. It is now very active in wine promotion and the organisation of the ‘Ban des Vendages’ – the festival that celebrates the beginning of the grape harvest.

On French canal holidays you will have the chance to taste the Saint-Emilion wines on-board the barge, in wine tasting sessions, and in local bars and restaurants. Now you can drink it and appreciate a little of its history too!

When it comes to things to do in Rwanda they aren’t many but extremely unique. The nation is long passed its war tom days and now certainly one the safest countries to tour in Africa. Not like other eastern Africa nation, there’s strict law & order, there is not any trash on the avenues, and lawns are maintained to unfeasible perfection. Here in this post, I am going to discuss about some things to explore during your adventure holidays in Rwanda. Please, have a good look at them:

Kigali – the capital city of Rwanda:

A splendid city conveniently placed in center of Rwanda, Kigali is a stunning city with stunning weather. One can find a flavor of history here by paying a trip to the genocide memorials and learn regarding the chaotic past of the nation. While I resided in Kenya and Ethiopia while I was residing in Africa, after touring Rwanda you could certainly settle down here.

Go gorilla trekking in volcanoes national park:

This is possibly the biggest attraction in Rwanda and tops nature lover’s travel list. Permits should be booked in advance to ensure a comfortable gorilla trekking. You will certainly get the full value of your money when you see mountain gorillas, just inches away from you.

Walk in the clouds in Nyungwe woodland:

Opened in 2010, this towering canopy walk is the 1st of its kind in the province. Floating a hair-raising 164ft on top of the forest floor, this adventurous walkway isn’t for the weak hearted, but it does provide splendid sights across the rainforest canopy and, if you are fortunate enough, you might encounter rare birds & monkeys in the woodland.

Lake Kivu:

A crucial part of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Kivu is the border between DR Congo and Rwanda. This is truly a great relaxing province where travelers are safe to visit and swim. Ensure that you pay a trip to towns like Gisenye and Kibuye close to the DR Congo border.

Canopy walk in the Nyungwe National Park:

This is possibly one of the most exhilarating things I’ve done quite sometime, to be honest. To be able to stride over a thin bridge, 200ft in the sky, and be able to look down – certainly I had an adventure of a lifetime. I also went for a chimpanzee trek in the Nyungwe National Park.

Barcelona’s Legendary Football Heritage

Whenever someone mentions the word ‘Barcelona’, many people will confess to immediately thinking of football.

What is it that forms this association and why is football important to people in the city and the whole of Catalonia?

An Incredible Brand

In one sense, the answer is obvious.

Barcelona Football Club (“Barça” to its friends) is one of the world’s truly great business enterprises and also now a global brand. The business brings with it some quite staggering metrics, including the fact that it is currently valued at a little over $3 billion.

Success also breeds recognition.

For a long time, Barcelona FC has been extremely successful in winning silverware, both domestically and internationally. That further publicizes the city across the world’s media and forms a yet stronger automatic association between club and city in people’s minds.

The social context here is also important and that covers the domains of politics and culture.

Social Ownership

Barcelona FC is comparatively rare as a football club or indeed any other sort of major business, in that it is owned and run by its own fans.

That is an extraordinary achievement in the days of vast corporate TV rights deals and sponsorship plus the long arm of global capitalism. Yet the club has virtually always operated that way and therefore, even when thinking of it as a business, the links between Barcelona FC and the wider city’s society are unbreakable.

Catalonia has a long association with social politics and for that reason, the club and its ownership approach holds a special place in the hearts of local people, including those (and they do exist!) who are not necessarily interested in football.

Political Culture

This team also has a history of being an expression of Catalan culture and political autonomy, though that’s not to be confused necessarily with nationalism.

Many of its players, unlike major UK clubs, are home-grown and Catalan is often the language used in club day-to-day affairs. It was a bastion of quiet assertion of Catalan ‘uniqueness’ during the Franco years, when attempts were made to crush the local culture and political will. That continues today where local people see it clearly as a Catalan rather than a Spanish club.

For all these reasons, Barcelona FC’s motto is “More than a Club” and you would struggle to find anyone locally who would disagree with that assertion. The club’s roots in the local and regional community are strong and deep – and are likely to remain that way.

To locals and outsiders alike, Barcelona as a city and cultural entity and the football club are virtually one and the same thing.

Getting There

The team’s ground is the world-famous and fantastic Camp Nou, which is oddly typically reversed in English to “Nou Camp” (pronounced roughly “Noi Kamp”).

You can get there easily by taking a taxi from Barcelona Airport. You can also get there by tram, metro and bus from the city centre.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct, the number one provider of shared and private airport transfers all over Europe and northern Africa. If you’re looking for an affordable taxi from Barcelona Airport, Lukas and his colleagues can make sure that you and your luggage get to and from the airport swiftly and safely.

What’s New in the La Tania Ski Resort – 2016

Every year, the famous Three Valleys’ La Tania ski resort makes a number of changes and improvements.

These are usually too numerous to outline individually, but here are some of the key ones.

• Season ending a week early. Actually, it opened a week earlier too! More to the point, the early closure just reflects current reality. Typically the last week sees the resort largely empty due partly to snow conditions and partly to holiday periods plus ‘custom and practice’. In 2016 they’re just recognising that officially.

• Six new pistes have appeared. That’s fantastic news of course, but space here doesn’t permit a full discussion and description. You can find full details on the official La Tania ski resort website.

• Add five new lifts! True, that includes a novice’s drag plus some extensions to those already in place, but even so, it’s boosting the infrastructure.

• Improvements to the green run. Some people commented that the La Tania ski resort’s Green Run was, in fact, a little bit too challenging for newbies. As a result, the resort has straightened out some of the bends a little, which will be good news to learners.

• Aquamotion opened. Near Courchevel village, this big water sport and spa centre has been fully re-opened. The basic entry prices start at 22€+, so it’s a little bit of an ‘ouch’, financially speaking, but the facilities are excellent.

• New Three Valleys ‘Superpass’. This gives you access to lots of slopes and lifts just about everywhere in the resort. For €340, €390 or €440, you’ll get access to 5 glaciers, 1300km of pistes and 391 lifts for 6, 7 or 8 days respectively.

• New train deals. Eurostar are offering an £89 round trip between London and Lyon, though on the way back you’ll need to get off in Lille now to re-check in for security reasons. In passing, the budget airlines have also increased their number of flights to the three nearby local airports, which should mean more choice and possibly increased fare competition.

• Re-seeding and tree work. For the 2016 ski season, a lot of cosmetic work has been done, which has made a very noticeable improvement to the resort.

• The La Tania to Méribel village road opened. After the road had been closed for a lengthy period of time due to roadwork, it now reopened – allowing even easier access from La Tania to Méribel and back.

That’s just a brief summary of the work and changes underway, but it does give a sense of the dynamism and on-going commitment to excellence at the La Tania ski resort.

Belinda Smythson works for Ski Amis, a specialist ski travel agency and booking service that has been helping avid skiers craft their perfect winter holiday for over a quarter of a century. If you\’re planning a getaway to La Tania ski resort, Paradiski, Espace Killy or Chamonix Valley, Ski Amis is the go-to company for winter sports fans searching for the holiday of a lifetime.

Tips to Choose the Best Airport Parking Facilities

Airport parking facilities are advantageous as it helps to take you to the terminal easily instead of allowing you to search for an accurate car parking space around the airport. The two most prime factors that need to be considered prior to booking an airport parking are rate and expediency. Usually, the shortest distance from your car to the departure terminal is costlier than the longest distance taken for transfer to reach your terminal.

You can be aware of the following tips meant to find the best airport parking facilities:

• Shorter transfer in airport parking allows parking facilities in the airport vicinity or the travellers may also adhere to a Meet and Greet Service. The Meet and Greet service pertains to the travelling facility availed by business travellers who wish to travel by first class. The Meet and Greet service generally meet the travellers nearby or at the departure terminal. You may have to walk a little distance to reach the check in desk at the airport.

• Picking up travellers from different parts of the airport car parking areas by shuttles or buses that allow shorter transfers in a scheduled route are not as expensive as an airport parking undertaken for a longer time near the terminal.

• Airport car parks are cheaper for parking far away from the vicinity of the airports. However nearer the parking to the terminal is the costlier it is.

• Airport transfers from Gatwick to Heathrow turn out to be cheaper if booked earlier off airport in the peak season.Book your car parking facility in advance to avoid last moment problems.

• Do some online researches about the airport and the price likely to be incurred for car parking. Visit the websites and take time to compare the results with the facilities provided at other airports.

• You can also save time and effort by carrying out checks on short stay car park deals. At peak times, such deals are not readily obtainable.

• It is also recommended to check the standards of car parking especially when you have booked a car parking space outside the airport. Usually a “park mark” scheme is an indication provided for proper safety and worthy standards.

• Most of the companies granting provisions of airport car parking guarantee rates and reservation incentives. In some cases if you register for deals you are provided with discount e-coupons through email.

Therefore, before making a reservation for your airport car parking, plan on your own requirements that lays a balance between price and comfort.
